Aspects of the Algerian-Austrian Relations: Treaties and the Austrian Consular Presence in Algiers (1727-1830).

This study deals with some manifestations of the relations between the Regency of Algiers and the Austrian Empire, which had relations of war and peace with the Ottoman Empire. And since Algiers was an Ottoman province, those relations had an impact on Algiers. In the Treaty of Passarovitz 1717, one of its articles referred to Algiers's commitment to this treaty, as well as the province of Tunis and Tripoli. I starts off by giving a historical overview of the state of Austria until 1748.Then I touch on the Austrian-Ottoman relations and their repercussions on the Algerian-Austrian relations; after that I deal with the circumstances of the two treaties concluded between Algiers with Austria in 1727 and 1748, and the analysis of their clauses, and then I touch on the Austrian consular presence in Algiers, which began in the year 1748. The aim of this study is to shed light on some of the manifestations of the relations between Regency of Algiers and the Empire of Austria during the modern era.

In this study, I rely on the historical method by falling back on the chronology of historical events, extrapolating and analyzing historical documents and texts, and deducing historical events and information. As for the most important findings, the study shows that Algerian-Austrian relations began late during the first quarter of the 18th century, compared with other European countries. These relations were not on the same pattern despite the conclusion of the two treaties; rather, they were tense after the year 1764, when the Austrian diplomatic representation in Algiers diminished. As for the recommendations, the issue of Algerian-Austrian relations requires more research on other aspects, including maritime clashes, loot, the issue of imperial captives, and the procedures for their release and gifts.
